Longevity Celebration: Dokolo Man Marks 100 Years, Advocates for Elderly Support
A centenary celebration in Dokolo District honored Mzee Yafesi Onyang, father-in-law to Lady Justice Hellen Obura, who marked 100 years of life with a call for greater support for the elderly and the importance of a healthy diet.
Mzee Yafesi, who reached this remarkable milestone last Friday, is a testament to the power of healthy living, stress-free life, and deep faith in God. Despite never receiving formal education, he championed education in his community, playing a significant role in establishing two primary schools in Kangai Sub-County.
Reflecting on his life, Mzee Yafesi emphasized the importance of investing in education and maintaining strong family and community ties. His son, Canon Richard Obura, expressed gratitude for their father’s unwavering dedication to his children and the community.
“His sacrifices and guidance have shaped who we are today, and we are forever grateful,” Canon Obura said.
The celebration drew prominent figures, including Bishop Emeritus John Charles Odur Kami, who commended the Onyang family for their care and urged the public to prioritize the well-being of the elderly.
“Many parents today face frustration and neglect from their children. Let us learn from Mzee Yafesi’s example and support our elders with love and care,” Bishop Odur Kami said.
Mzee Yafesi and his wife Christine, aged 97, raised 16 children, seven of whom survive today. Their legacy is evident in the schools, churches, and lives they have touched in the community. Lady Justice Hellen Obura also highlighted the remarkable journey of her father-in-law, describing him as an inspiration to many.
“Mzee Yafesi’s life is a beacon of faith, resilience, and dedication. He has left an indelible mark on our community, and we are privileged to celebrate him,” she said.
As the community gathered to honor Mzee Yafesi, the event became not just a celebration of his life but a powerful reminder of the need to care for the elderly and value the lessons they impart.
