Renowned Journalist Patricia Aceng Joins Fierce Race For Lira City Woman Mp Seat
The political landscape in Lira City is heating up ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Renowned radio journalist Patricia Aceng has officially declared her interest to run against two ministers, setting the stage for what promises to be a dramatic showdown in one of Uganda’s most closely watched political arenas.
In a bold move that has stirred the political waters in Lira City, veteran renown journalist Patricia Aceng has come out to challenge two sitting ministers Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng and Gender Minister Betty Amongi for the Woman Member of Parliament seat.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lira City, Patricia Aceng said her decision to join the race stems from a desire to restore peace, unity, and push for the economic revival of Lira as a commercial and industrial hub
The seat is currently held by Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who remains confident of retaining her position.
Last year, Gender Minister Betty Amongi shocked the political scene when she announced she would abandon her Oyam South constituency to also contest in Lira City.
Patricia Aceng, who has spent years in journalism between Kampala and Lira, is known for her relentless advocacy for development and women’s rights. She believes her track record of community service and integrity makes her the unifying candidate in an increasingly competitive field.
Aceng will first have to battle it out in the NRM primaries, where she will face off against Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. Her personal life has also drawn public interest she is married to Tonny Ogwang, a staunch UPC supporter and current Division Councilor for Lira City West.
Meanwhile, Workers’ Councilor Sarah Awor Angweri also recently entered the race, bringing the total number of NRM aspirants for the Lira City Woman MP seat to three.
With two ministers, a renowned journalist, and a local councilor all eyeing the same seat, the battle for Lira City’s Woman MP is shaping up to be one for the history books.
