Otafiire Stirs Lira City Politics, Criticizes Amongi’s Candidature Against Dr. Aceng
The announcement of Betty Amongi’s bid to contest for the Lira City Woman MP seat has ignited heated political debates in Lira City. The tension escalated over the weekend during the Lira City Bodaboda Festival, where Internal Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire openly criticized Amongi’s decision to challenge her fellow minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the current Lira City Woman MP.
The festival, organized by the Lira United Motorcycle Association (LUMBA) in collaboration with Dr. Aceng, attracted thousands of participants and key political figures, including Maj. Gen. Otafiire and State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang.
Speaking at the event, Otafiire questioned the intentions behind Amongi’s move, describing it as unusual for a minister to abandon her constituency to challenge a colleague who has made notable contributions to the community.
“my sister Amongi, UPC, you have your constituency if you have been producing milk, why are you running away from your constituency?” Otafiire remarked.
The event also highlighted Dr. Aceng’s strong ties to the community as she was officially installed as the patron of the Bodaboda association, a symbolic recognition of her impact in Lira City.
Earlier in her interview, Betty Amongi justified her decision to run for the seat, stating that it is her constitutional right to contest and that her move is rooted in a desire to uphold her family’s political legacy while improving the lives of the city’s residents.
As political rivalry heats up between the two influential leaders, residents of Lira City are keenly observing the unfolding drama. Many hope the upcoming election will bring not only a fair contest but also leadership that fosters development and unity in the region.
