Lango Cultural Foundation to Sue Gender Minister Betty Amongi
The Lango Cultural Foundation has announced plans to take legal action against Gender Minister Betty Amongi for failing to enforce a court order issued last year by Justice Philips Odoki.
In the first meeting of the newly appointed cabinet of the Lango Cultural Foundation, the ministers addressed several critical issues affecting the community. Among the top priorities was Minister Amongi’s refusal to re-gazette Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii as the Paramount Chief of Lango, despite a clear court ruling issued by Justice Odoki in 2023. The court had ordered the re-gazetting of Mzee Odur Ebii, but Minister Amongi recently declared publicly that she would not implement the ruling.
The Foundation expressed deep disappointment, noting that the minister’s failure to act has caused significant harm to the institution and undermined the cultural leadership of the Lango people.
The meeting also addressed the tragic incident in Dokolo District, where an Acholi woman accused of theft was attacked by a mob and later died from her injuries. This incident has fueled tribal tensions between the Lango and Acholi communities, prompting the Foundation to extend an apology to the Acholi community.
“The Lango Cultural Foundation wishes to emphasize that this was an isolated act of mob justice and does not reflect the values of the Lango people,” a representative of the Foundation stated.
In addition to these concerns, the Foundation discussed strategies to tackle rising criminal activities, including domestic violence, alcoholism, and murder, which have increasingly affected the region. The Lango Cultural Foundation remains committed to upholding justice, restoring harmony between communities, and ensuring the stability and integrity of its cultural leadership.
