Lira University today celebrated its 6th graduation ceremony at the main campus in Lira City, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s higher education sector. The ceremony was graced by the State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, who represented the First Lady and Minister of Education, Janet Museveni.

A total of 581 students graduated from six faculties, including Medicine, Public Health, and Education, among others, representing an increase of 181 graduands compared to last year. The event also marked the university’s first cohort of Master’s graduates in Midwifery, a landmark achievement for the institution.

In his remarks, Minister Muyingo called on graduates to become agents of change by leveraging innovation and research to tackle societal challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the quality of higher education in the country.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Jaspher Ogwal Okeng, described the event as a testament to Lira University’s growing role in expanding access to higher education. He encouraged graduates to embrace hard work and perseverance, noting that professional milestones, such as becoming a professor, often require decades of dedication.

The Chairperson of the Governing Council announced plans to establish a Faculty of Agriculture in Amolatar District. Land for the project has already been acquired, and the university is actively seeking funding to develop the faculty and establish a research hub.

Youth MP for Northern Uganda, Okot, highlighted the importance of meaningful employment for graduates. He urged young people to focus on creating jobs rather than solely seeking them and called for a minimum wage and improved opportunities for internships.

The ceremony was a moment of pride for Lira University, underscoring its contribution to human capital development and its role in shaping Uganda’s future workforce.
