Parliament was informed on Wednesday that the commencement of construction on the new Karuma bridge is scheduled for September 2026.

The report on the state of transport infrastructure, specifically roads, bridges, and airports, was presented to the house by the vice chairperson of the Committee on Physical Infrastructure, Hon. Tony Awany (Nwoya County MP).

The committee highlighted in their report that the original bridge, constructed in 1963, was shut down in April 2024 for refurbishment, leading to disruptions in travel and commerce in the area.

It was recommended by the committee that the Uganda National Roads Authority expedite the process of building a new bridge, encompassing feasibility studies, designs, and securing funds. Additionally, the committee advised UNRA to strictly adhere to the three-month deadline for repairing the old bridge to restore normal traffic flow on the roads.

During the plenary session, several Members of Parliament expressed dissatisfaction with the delays and increased transportation costs for goods and individuals resulting from the closure of the Karuma Bridge to heavy-duty vehicles.

Hon. Anthony Akol, Kilak North MP, emphasized that UNRA must accelerate the restoration of the old bridge to mitigate the inconveniences currently faced by road users.

Hon. Judith Alyek (Kole Woman MP) suggested that the government explore alternative routes in Northern Uganda, such as the road through Masindi Port, and enhance the condition of the ferry to serve people while awaiting the repair of the Karuma bridge.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, instructed the relevant ministry to address the concerns raised by the Members regarding the status of the Karuma Bridge.

The house is set to approve the report on physical infrastructure in Northern Uganda during the Thursday session.
